How to repaint brake callipers?

Nowadays, more and more drivers want to make their vehicle stand out on the road and give it an individual style. One element that can make a vehicle stand out is the brake callipers. Traditionally, they are produced in silver or black, but increasingly we are seeing cars whose callipers have been painted in a variety of vibrant colours. Repainting the brake callipers is a great way to stand out from the crowd and give your vehicle a fierce, sporty feel. In addition, it does not require a lot of money and you can do it yourself.

Why paint brake callipers?

An attractive appearance is not everything. Callipers are one of the key components of a car's braking system. Their function is to press the brake pads against the discs, which generates friction that inhibits wheel rotation and thus stops the vehicle. They are therefore fundamental to our safety on the road. Calliper varnish will protect the callipers from adverse weather conditions, corrosion and damage, extending the life of the entire brake system.

What product should I use to paint the brake callipers?

When proceeding to paint the callipers, we must remember their role – their work is fundamental to our safety. This is why it is so important to use the right measures. Brake calliper coatings must be distinguished by their ability to withstand the high temperatures that are generated during braking. They must also be resistant to road conditions and mechanical damage. Otherwise, the paint will begin to peel when exposed to negative influences and, not only will our work be in vain, but loose pieces of paint can disrupt the braking system and pose a danger when driving.

BOLL calliper paints meet all the above requirements. They are made of the highest quality resins. They form a durable coating, resistant to temperatures up to 230°C, water, petrol, salt, chemicals, stone impacts, sand and brake dust. Our paints are available in seven, highly saturated colours: red, yellow, blue, green, black, silver and gold, so there is something for everyone.

Painting brake callipers step by step

Changing the colour of the callipers does not require much time or specialised equipment. All you need is BOLL clamp spray, silicone remover, sandpaper of various gradations, foil and tapes to protect the surface, a tool kit and a jack.

Start the work by lifting the car and removing the wheels. Now we need to clean the painted parts thoroughly. It is best to wash the wheel arches and callipers with a pressure washer or garden hose. The surface should then be sanded and loose rust fragments removed.

Before painting, we still need to protect the discs and the other elements of the brake system to avoid them getting dirty. We can use BOLL foil and varnish tape for this.

The surface thus prepared should be degreased with a silicone remover, which will remove any residual contamination.

We can now proceed with the painting. Before use, the paint should be thoroughly mixed by shaking for approx. 3 minutes. The varnish is applied in 2-3 layers from a distance of 15-20 cm. Wait 5-10 minutes after each coat to allow the varnish to evaporate. The total drying time for the clamp varnish is approximately 12 hours at 20°C.

Repainting brake callipers yourself is a simple way to make your vehicle stand out on the road. It requires a small investment in terms of money and time, and the end result can be impressive. Remember, however, that brake callipers, like any other car component, are subject to wear and tear. Their durability depends, among other things, on the driving style, road conditions, temperature, tyre pressure and also on the quality of the brake pads used. It is therefore a good idea to regularly check the condition of the brake callipers and pads and replace them when necessary.
