Damage to the bodywork of a car is very common. All it takes is a stone shot from under the wheel, careless parking, a minor collision or a scratch. Major damage requires the help of a professional, but minor defects can be dealt with by ourselves with the appropriate putty.
Automotive putty is a type of filling compound used in the body repair process. It is used to even out the surface of the body by filling cavities, bumps and dents. Depending on the type, it can be used at different stages of the car repair process.
There are many types of putties available in the BOLL range, which differ in composition, properties and purpose. Choosing the right putty is very important for the paint job to have the desired effect.
Fibre glass putty
It is a special type of putty reinforced with micro glass fibre, which gives it increased mechanical strength. It is used to fill large cavities and to reinforce weakened car body elements. When dry, it forms a very hard, damage-resistant surface. Excellent for repairing corroded and welded parts, in particularly vulnerable and hard-to-reach areas.
Aluminium putty
Filling putty with aluminium dust, which increases its resistance to elevated temperatures and guarantees excellent adhesion. It is characterised by its high elasticity and smooth texture. This type of putty is designed for use on large surfaces and parts exposed to high temperatures, i.e. in the immediate vicinity of the engine or in areas exposed to sunlight.
Putty for plastics
A special plastic putty is used to repair plastic parts such as bumpers, wings and mirror housings. It is characterised by very good adhesion to the substrate and exceptional flexibility.
Universal putty
As the name suggests, it is the most popular and versatile type of putty. It is used to fill both small and larger cavities. Thanks to its suitable flexibility and very good adhesion, it is easy to apply and process. Ideally suited for mechanical sanding and hand sanding. It can be used on steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, polyester laminates, old paint finishes and also wood.
Soft putty
Soft polyester putty, for filling both large and small cavities. It is very flexible and spreads easily, so even inexperienced users have no problems using it. Excellent sandability. Like the universal putty, it is suitable for use on most substrates.
Finish putty
A soft finishing putty, used for filling small cavities. The finish putty is in the form of a fine-grained paste and is very easy to work with. It is applied to sanded and cleaned surfaces. It is suitable for use in areas that have been sanded down after the use of filler putty and require filling.
Spray putty
Applied by air spray, spray putty is used for finishing work. It allows for a perfectly smooth coating even on very large surfaces.
All types of putty should be applied to a cleaned, matted and degreased substrate. The best effect will be achieved by applying several thin layers of putty instead of one thick layer. This will allow the material to cure more quickly. Once the surface is well levelled, we can proceed to the next step in the painting process.
The table below gives an overview of BOLL putties, their properties and applications. Use it to simplify the selection of the right product for the type of repair.
